Muskego, WI – Once again it was the cars from the Fitzlaff Garage that were the class of the field in the Super Hot Mod Unlimited Championship series race.

Round two of the inaugural season took place at the quick and challenging Badger Raceway and Mike Fitzlaff continued his series domination with another SHMUC victory.

“Mike [Fitzlaff] said he gave me the ‘fast’ car.”
– Dean Strom
A new body and chassis for this race didn’t change the fact that Fitzlaff is the fastest driver in the series. The winning Corvette from the last event went to Fitxlaff’s teammate, Dean Strom and he set the pace early, winning the opening heat race. Just a lap back and also in a Corvette was John Wiedemann followed by Ev Kamikawa. Kamikawa, a long time Ferrari driver, ditched that brand which he raced in the last event and showed up in a Lamborghini. Even though the Lamborghini was red, something just didn’t seem right.

The second heat race was dominated by Fitzlaff in his new Corvette as he won the race by fourteen laps over Mike Lack. Lack’s Datsun was 280ZX was followed to the checkers by rookies Bill Black, also in a Datsun, and Keith Lindbeck in a Richard Petty Pontiac stocker.

The final event featured the Fitzlaff Corvette Motorsports team of Fitzlaff and Strom verses teammates in other series Wiedemann and Lack. Again, it was the Fitzlaff team that dominated but in the first half Strom surprised the crowd by jumping ahead of his teammate. All cars were being pushed to their limits on the high speed track and a multitude of crashes featured bodies and chassis separating upon impact.

“Mike [Fitzlaff] said he gave me the ‘fast’ car,” Strom explained in the second half as things began to change in the second half of the race. “Now I think he [Fitzlaff] is passing me every other lap.”

Fitzlaff overcame a four lap disadvantage to get back on the lead lap when he became involved in a multicar car crash at the finish line. Lack lost control on the straightaway and Fitzlaff, running at top speed, could not avoid the Datsun. Both cars exploded with Fitzlaff upside-down under the scoring tower, Lack in the infield and Wiedemann stopping just a millimeter from Fitzlaff’s ride. With forty seconds left in the race, the race was halted until order was restored and the scoring bridge fixed.

Fitzlaff took off when the green flag flew and sped to a three lap lead over teammate Strom in second place. Lack “magically” fixed his ride following the crash and finished third followed by Wiedemann.
Fitzlaff’s total of 108 laps set the record for the most laps in a SHMUC final. With his second win in just the two races of the season, Fitzlaff stretched out his lead at the top of the standings.

The SHMUC series is scheduled to resume following the holidays with a race at Turtle Creek on January 15th in 2015. There is a possible exhibition/non-points event being planned on December 11th at the Lack Track in West Bend with the series looking to test the high-speed machines on a technical short track. Stay tuned for more information on this event.
